The kangaroo as our national icon. It is deeply interconnected in our landscape, culture, and ethos. Renowned globally, the kangaroo represents the country’s wildlife, resilience, distinctive character, and abundance of energy. As the feature on the national flag it would authentically (and easily) represent Australia’s spirit and uniqueness to the world.

The kangaroo alongside a boomerang-shaped constellation of seven stars is a testament to Australia’s unity and diversity. The seven stars, each with seven points, represent the six states and one for all territories, symbolising the collective strength and unity of Australia. The boomerang shape signifies the enduring presence of Indigenous Australians across all states and territories, acknowledging their deep and caring connection for Country.

Why Change the Current Flag
The new proposed Torres Strait Islander Australian flag design maintains the existing Torres Strait Islander colours, ensuring the vibrancy and symbolism associated with these hues endure. The blue, green, black, and white colours carry profound meaning, symbolising the sea, land, people, and peace.
The flag design prominently features a white Dhari (headdress), symbolising Torres Strait Islanders and their cultural identity. Additionally, a white five-pointed star beneath it signifies peace, the five major island groups, and the navigational importance of stars to the seafaring people of the Torres Strait.
Incorporating these meaningful symbols into the flag creates a powerful representation of Torres Strait Islander heritage and connection to the land. This, along with the traditional symbols of the boomerang and kangaroo, makes the design a poignant reflection of cultural richness. The shared design with the proposed national flag fosters unity, recognising Australia’s diverse cultural roots and promoting reconciliation.
In essence, this Torres Strait Islander Australian flag, with the inclusion of the Dhari, the symbolic star, and traditional icons, is a visual representation of a united Australia that values collective identity and acknowledges the unique contributions of Torres Strait Islander peoples. It symbolises shared history and a commitment to a harmonious future, emphasising the cultural significance of the Torres Strait Islander community within the broader Australian context.
